I HEAR YOU SAYING, WHAT IS THIS - WAYNE ROOT BETTING HORSES? Well first it's not just me. I've assembled the most star-studded team ever- my horserace championship THINK TANK. More on that later.  But you may also be surprised to learn that I made a fortune betting horses in college. Sure, I made my name as a football handicapper on Financial News Network (now known as CNBC), USA Network, FOX Sports Net, Comcast Sports, Spike TV, Superstation WGN, Discovery Channel, and as a guest on more TV shows than I can name. I've been celebrated on TV as "The Face of Vegas" and "The Oddsmaker of everything in the world". But the fact is, horserace winners helped pay for my college. I grew up in Mount Vernon, N.Y., only minutes from Yonkers Raceway. As a student at Columbia University with no income, I found that betting the trotters was a handy way (and a legal way) to multiply pocket money into fungible assets! I discovered I had a good head for the game and the rest, as they say, is history.

August is a fantastic time to be betting horses. The NFL pre-season is underway and for bettors who let the summer slip by without building their bankrolls, there's nothing that can do it faster than horse racing. Saratoga and Del Mar especially excite me because both tracks are renowned for their big payoffs. In each case, you have shippers coming in from around the country and the horses are running in different environments than they're accustomed to. One went to Harvard Business School, one to Wharton. Two have been profiled in the NY Times. We got together late last year. Most of them bought into my main argument.
